Our truck accident lawyer in Kansas City will get to work on securing the compensation you deserve for all of your injury-related expenses. Today, we want to discuss a recent crash that took the lives of two people from Kansas City.

This was a tragic incident

We have learned that a recent crash in nearby Cameron took the lives of a woman and a 9-year-old boy, both of whom were from Kansas City.

Savion Spearman-Lathrop, 9, and Desari Lathrop, 29, were killed on August 13 when they slammed into the back of a semi-truck. The truck, driven by Kenneth Ethridge of California, was stopped at a red light. When he continued driving, the Honda CRV with the victims struck the rear of the vehicle. The semi-truck stopped on the side of the road, and the Honda overturned.

Both victims died at the scene of the crash. Unfortunately, neither Desari Lathrop or Savion Spearman Lathrop were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Another passenger in the vehicle, a 3-year-old girl, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. That passenger was wearing a seatbelt.

This accident highlights some important topics

Seatbelts save lives. There is no denying that. Though they cannot prevent all injuries or deaths, the chances of survival significantly increase with seatbelt use.

An impact with a semi-truck is much more likely to cause serious injuries and fatalities. A fully loaded semi-truck can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds, whereas a regular passenger vehicle averages only 4,000 pounds. During the latest reporting year in Missouri, there were thousands of injuries as a result of large truck accidents.

It is absolutely vital that drivers take precautions when operating around these large trucks. It is not uncommon for us to see severe injuries such as the following after a large truck crash:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Bone fractures
  • Loss of or damage to bodily organ
  • Dismemberment or amputation
  • Other injuries that inhibit a person’s daily activities
  • Significant disfigurement
