Blind Woman And Her Guide Dog Struck By Semi-Truck

On Behalf of | Sep 17, 2019 | Pedestrian Accident

Nobody should have to worry about getting struck by a vehicle when they are walking in or around the roadway legally. Unfortunately, pedestrian accidents caused by negligent or careless drivers are common in our area. At Townsend Law LLC, our qualified and experienced team is ready to get to work if you have been injured. Today, our Kansas City pedestrian accident attorneys want to talk about a recent crash that seriously injured a blind woman and her dog.

What happened in this case?

Today we want to bring you a story from a little outside of Kansas City. On August 22, a blind Eudora woman and her guide dog were struck by a semi-truck

“Initial investigation shows a semi-truck, a commercial motor vehicle, struck a pedestrian. The woman that was hit was taken to a hospital in Kansas City,” said a spokesperson with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at the intersection of East 14th Street and Church Avenue. Witnesses to the incident say that the woman and her dog were crossing the street when she was struck and that the truck dragged her underneath.

Doctors have stabilized the woman, and her condition continues to improve (her guide dog was not seriously injured in the incident). The incident is still under investigation, but people in the area have their suspicions of what caused the crash.

“There has been a lot of complains launched by people about cars trying to blow through when they are getting ready to go through the intersection,” said one resident. This happens even though crosswalks are present.

Unfortunately, many pedestrian crashes occur in areas where the pedestrian has the right-of-way. During the latest reporting year in Missouri, we know that there were nearly 1,400 people injured in pedestrian accidents. There were 101 people killed.

Some of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents include drivers who are:

  • Impaired by alcohol or drugs
  • Distracted by electronic devices
  • Driving too fast for conditions or fail to yield the right-of-way

These incidents often lead to serious injuries. Our Kansas City pedestrian accident attorneys commonly see the following injuries as a result of these incidents:

  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations
  • Internal organ damage
  • Internal bleeding
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Whiplash injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Concussions
